How ChatGPT picks which brands to mention
ChatGPT does not pick brands at random, and it does not pick the highest bidder. It assembles an answer from patterns in what it has read — and a few factors decide which brands make the cut.
The factors that matter most
- Clear positioning. Brands that are easy to describe in one sentence get mentioned more. If your own site cannot say plainly what you sell and for whom, the AI cannot either.
- Independent mentions. Reviews, comparisons, "best of" lists, and forum discussions are strong signals. A brand only its own site talks about looks thin to the model.
- Recency and consistency. Fresh, consistent information across sources beats a single old page that says something different.
- Fit to the question. The AI matches brands to the specific question asked. A general "best tools" question and a specific "best tool for X on a budget" question can produce entirely different names.
What this means for you
You cannot pay ChatGPT to mention you, and you cannot edit its answer directly. What you can do is change the inputs: clearer pages, more independent mentions, and consistent facts everywhere your brand appears. Then verify by running the prompts yourself — which is exactly what the AI visibility audit does. For the technical side — how ChatGPT's crawlers actually read the web — see OpenAI's crawler documentation.
Try it on your brand. The free audit snapshot runs the prompts buyers use in your niche and shows who gets named instead of you.
